Soaring to New Heights with Busch Wildlife Sanctuary

Writer: Lisa LafranceLisa Lafrance

At Impact the Palm Beaches, we believe in funding transformative projects that make a lasting difference in our community. Thanks to your generosity, we are proud to support Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in their mission to rehabilitate and release Florida’s native wildlife. Our $48,000 grant is playing a crucial role in the construction of five modernized and expanded flight cages, essential for rehabilitating injured birds and preparing them for return to the wild.

Building a Safe Haven for Native Birds

The Rehabilitation Flight Cages Project at Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is designed to provide large native birds - such as owls, falcons, and other raptors—a secure environment to regain their strength and flight capabilities. These state-of-the-art enclosures are a critical step in the recovery process, ensuring that rehabilitated birds have the best chance of survival once released back into their natural habitat.

Despite some delays in the permitting process, construction is well underway, with site plans finalized, permits approved, and the foundational structure already in progress. The project remains on track to be completed in 2025, with the final installation of utilities and outfitting of perches and cameras expected by mid-year.

A Future Home for Rescued Raptors

One of the sanctuary’s current patients, Patient #4501, a Peregrine Falcon, is set to be one of the first to benefit from these new flight cages. Rescued in October from Palm Beach International Airport, this falcon suffered a severe neck laceration and a fractured wing - injuries likely caused by a collision with an aircraft.

Under the dedicated care of Busch Wildlife’s veterinary team, the falcon has undergone multiple surgeries, physical therapy, and cold laser treatments to restore mobility and reduce inflammation. With continued flight conditioning and supportive care, this resilient bird is on the path to recovery and will soon take its first test flights in the new enclosures before being released back into the wild.

Sustainability & Long-Term Impact

The flight cages are built to hurricane-resistant standards, ensuring their longevity and ability to serve wildlife for years to come. Additionally, this project has raised awareness for Busch Wildlife Sanctuary’s mission, garnering widespread community support and media attention. Through contributions from various funders - including Palm Beach County Cultural Fund, The Batchelor Foundation, and private donors - this vital initiative is becoming a reality.
